A Hardwood History
Back in the eighteen hundreds, wood flooring was viewed as a decorative element for a home, and only the wealthiest people were able to afford the solid plank floors due to the expensive costs and the labor it took to handcraft them. It was seen as such an expensive floor, that even the Palace of Versailles had it. Earlier versions of hardwood planks were very wide and thick, and they had to be nailed to joists for proper installation. Due to the advancement in technology, they were able to make them much thinner.
As population and cities enlarged, more homes were built, and the demand for hardwood flooring increased. In the 1920's, small homes and bungalows with oak floors became more common since people were able to afford them. During the Great Depression in 1930, however, the hardwood industry fell into some issues since no one had any money. Fewer homes were being built, and the industry suffered.
During World War Two, many war-time factories were in development, and hardwood floors were used in them, thus increasing the sales. Hardwood flooring then erupted in with the increase in home development, and the industry could barely keep up. In the fifties, the house building reached its peak, and the demand for hardwood flooring was huge at a steady pace.
In 1980, the introduction of prefinished floors came about, and new stains and varnishes were made available. Today, hardwood flooring is a widely popular and highly demanded flooring material, and it is made in many North American and exotic woods from around the world.
