- Floating - If padding has been placed between the subfloor and the hardwood boards and no mechanical fastening has been used to hold them down, this allows to boards to loosely "float".
- Nail Down - The most common historical hardwood installation method. This is simply when nails are driven through the hardwood planks into the subfloor, securely fastening them together.
- Staple Down - This is very similar to nailing the boards down, except staples are used instead to connect them together.
- Glue Down - For this method, an adhesive is placed on the planks to hold them down to the subfloor. This method is used more with engineered hardwood flooring.
